I tried to find one to use in a recent post, but couldn't. Must have been looking in the wrong places.
I realize there are lot of similarities, like the fact that they're both open, and free. But some things are different, like the lack of realtime in-world modeling tools that make multi-user design collaboration so effective in virtual worlds like opensim. So, its not really apples to apples yet.
But still, I really think this is a conversation we need to keep having, so when X3D becomes a feasible platform for professional architectural collaboration, we'll all have a head start! ;-)
If you're willing, maybe we could host a discussion/meeting in an X3D location of your choosing, to show off the architectural CAD/BIM import feature, so we can see it in action? If you ping me with some instructions I can share with the group, along with a day/time that works and we'll go from there!
Looking forward.

@MetaverseOne It would be great if you could point us to a video demo of that free CAD/BIM import into the multi-user browser-based world so we can compare the quality and features of each environment. I do have to share there has been multi-user and stand alone web3D (browser plug-ins) environments to share and decorate your CAD/BIM models for going on about half a year now (free of charge). If one cares about the metadata associated with these models, I recommend a look at more serious web3D technologies. Glad to see this happening for those architects that enjoy playing in SL/OpenSim, a great thing for you guys. :)

Great post! Thanks - I think that this is one of the better explanations I have seen of the possibilities that Revit and 3D modeling hold. BTW, not sure if you have used it or not, but Arcat (http://www.arcat.com) has a free online library of true generic & proprietary BIM objects for use in Revit (About 500 objects). Thanks again for this amazing post - I will be sure to show it to clients asking about Revit and 3D modeling!

This is an incredible and inspirational blog post! This has been on my radar as the #1 requirement for my work since starting with SL 18 months ago. As Chip says this cannot be underestimated. I will be surprised if the brightest or even the dumbest in Linden Labs do not recognize the expansive nature of being able to provide their platform as well to professionals & manufacturers, from Urban Planners to Engineers to Architects.

Great post…… This has been on my radar as the #1 requirement for my work since starting with SL 18 months ago.
