3D Mesh Import into Second Life: A Sneak Peek at SLCC!
I couldn’t be there, so I don’t know exactly how it went down (note to self… don’t miss SLCC next year!). All I can do is paste a few early snippets from those who witnessed the announcement:
“At his keynote today at SLCC09, Tom Hale aka T Linden presented a sneak peak of 3D mesh import into Second Life.” via Mechatiki
“Sculptys came, SL survived. Mesh is coming. SL will thrive.” via Dusan Writer
There is a lot to learn, certainly a lot to figure out, and the possibility (read probability) that there is still a long wait ahead. Nevertheless, I think this potential feature, alongside all of the other exciting announcements they made at SLCC, are absolutely huge. Even if they pull off half of what they’re describing, this surely signals the beginning of a new and exciting day for virtual worlds.

Err, that’s PEEK, not PEAK.
Gosh it would have been great if you were there – I immediately thought of you when Tom showed mesh imports – and followed that up with shadows! And I mean real, rich, beautiful, time-specific.
Overall….I haven’t been this excited about where things are going since I rezzed my first prim. But I’d better give it a day to come down a little and try to be a little more nuanced about it all hahaha.
That would be such a huge development for architects (and any designers for that matter). So glad they are pushing forward with this.
I was excited to hear this news! Mesh Imports and shading is definitely going to help us. Dusan I enjoyed your sessions, I was the one with the security issue last year! Ouch! Jon and I are trying to move the architecture, design, technology, engineering AEC segment forward. Hope to talk to you in the future!
I’m with you on this- greatly exciting- coming in from Maya? 3dsMax or Sketch up? or all of them? Set Design will never be the same
